Running in Boulder: Part 3 – Estes Park

After my run at Hall Ranch, I decided to head up north to the city Estes Park which sits at about 7,500 ft above sea level. When I left Lyons, it was in the low 60s. When I got to Estes Park, it was only 43 degrees. Brrrr! No wonder they had hats on there! I got some strange looks walking around in shorts and running shirt with my arm warmers on. Go figure!

Besides seeing the town a bit, the real reason I headed up there was to see the Stanley Hotel . Now, you probably have not heard of The Stanley, but I bet you know the hotel. It is the inspiration and location of Steven King’s novel The Shining. In the book, it was actually called the Overlook Hotel. King actually stayed there while he was writing the book. However, it isn’t where the movie was filmed. That was filmed on a set in England and at the Timberline Lodge at the base of Mt Hood.

The Stanley is listed as one of the most haunted locations in the United States. Legend has it the hotel is still haunted by the late Mr. Stanley of Stanley Carpet Cleaners who built the Hotel at the turn of the century. I want to make it back for an overnight there one day…
